Loose Bay Campground receives $23,000 Grant from SIDIT

Loose Bay Campground was established through the efforts of multiple agencies: Regional District of Okanagan Similakmeen, Town of Oliver, Oliver Rotary Club, Community Futures, Ministry of Forestry, BC Cherry Association and volunteers to address the issues of migrant farm workers in the Oliver area. Migrant workers arrive every spring to the South Okanagan providing workers for the many orchards and vineyards. Before the campground was established, unorganized camps created damage to the local environment. Loose Bay Campground provides a safe and inexpensive campsite with flush toilets, hot showers, firewood, full-time on site manager and has been self-sufficient for 10 years. However, the campground does not have a functioning water source and cannot continue without one. The implications of not having an organized camp for migrant workers are immense. The Loose Bay Campground Society will immediately use SIDIT funds to build a brand new connect to the municipal water system. Read more...

A SIDIT Success Story -Golden Nordic Ski Club Society

In 2010, SIDIT contributed $50,000 to the construction of a 3000 square foot day lodge and a new system of homologated race trails which provided The Golden Nordic Ski Club Society the opportunity to host major international level races. The Society had very little time to enjoy their Chalet before they were hosting the Dawn Mountain Challenge that attracted one of Canada's heroes: Brian McKeever, a Paralympic Gold Medalist. The club competition committee won a bid for the 2012 Canadian Masters Championships beating out two bids from Eastern Canada. This was directly due to the quality of the venue and club strength. This event also increased the Society's exposure to the US and the rest of Canada. In the 2012/13 season they experienced significant growth and capacity building. Facility improvements included on-site ski equipment rentals, a Kids Corner and Kitchenette in the Chalet, the Dawn Mountain Ski School and a new easy trail linking our upper and lower trails named Marmot. They also developed two snowshoe trails. The Society is debt free and are doing well financially by covering their operational costs without operational subsidies. Read more...
