Education Awards Program - Students in Southern Interior share $ 5.2 million
Over the past three years, students from communities across the Southern Interior of B.C. who entered a wide range of trades, technology and academic programs at four Southern Interior Universities and Colleges received financial support in the form of scholarships and bursaries. $3.9 million for Post-Secondary Trades and Technology Awards and for dual credit Secondary School Awards has already been disbursed.
In addition to the above, a $990,000 fund supporting research, innovation and entrepreneurship was jointly established by SIDIT and the BC Innovation Council, who contributed $495,000 each. The SIDIT/BCIC programs support students, faculty, post-secondary institutions, industry organizations and companies involved in the areas of technology innovation, research, development and commercialization. $275,750 has already been disbursed.
In early 2011, the SIDIT Board of Directors approved a further $275,000 investment into the education awards program for 2011-2012. These funds will be adjudicated and disbursed by University of British Columbia Okanagan, Thompson Rivers University, Okanagan College, College of the Rockies and Selkirk College. With a strong focus on trades and technology, sciences, engineering entrepreneurship and innovation, SIDIT's investment in education will continue to have a major effect in attracting students into programs key to the economic success of the Southern Interior.
